New Zealand Breakers forward Akil Mitchell suffered a gruesome freak injury during his team’s 94-81 loss to Cairns this week that left his eyeball out of its socket. While going up for a contested rebound, Mitchell was poked in the eye by Taipans center Nnanna Egwu. The poke was so hard that as Mitchell feel to the floor in pain, his left eye came out of its socket. While the broadcast did not show a replay of the injury due to its intense graphic nature, viewers did get a quick glimpse of the eye hanging. Miraculously, Mitchell is expected to be ok. “Akil is sitting up and resting, and has vision to his injured eye,” Breakers general manager Dillon Boucher told the New Zealand Herald . “While there is some damage, the early reports are very positive that the injury is not as serious as first feared.” Following the injury, the game was stopped for nearly 15 minutes as Mitchell was eventually helped up and taken to a nearby hospital.
