( 4UMF NEWS ) Woman Votes In Labor:
The 21-year-old was eligible to vote in her first presidential election this year, and knew she would not let anything get in her way.
So when Ms Malone entered labour overnight, she refused to go to the hospital until she was able to cast her vote.
Around 8.30am, she visited the New Life Celebration Church in the Chicago suburbs and voted – even though by this time her water had broken and her contractions were just five minutes apart.
She found it hard to concentrate of filling out her ballot properly, given the the increasing pain she was suffering in the run-up to the birth.
‘I was just trying to read and breathe, read and breathe,’ she told WBBM Newsradio. ‘That’s what I kept telling myself – read and breathe, read and breathe.’
She then drove to the hospital in order to give birth to a baby girl, her first child.
‘I never voted before so this made a major difference in my life,’ she said. ‘And I wanted this to be a stepping-stone for my daughter.’
Ms Malone’s commitment to democracy was praised by officials in Cook County, who held her up as a model to other citizens.
‘What a terrific example she is showing for the next generation, especially her new son or daughter.’
