An 84-year-old Utah woman was found stabbed 111 times, with her grandson standing over her body. Zachary Cole Weston, 21, could get the death penalty after he told cops he slashed up Joyce “Honey” Dexter, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.
He was covered in blood and still brandishing a knife when officers arrived at their Salt Lake City home Oct. 3.
She had been stabbed nine times in the heart alone, and some of her organs had been hacked out.
Weston later told police that he had sliced up his grandmother’s “belly, her jugular and her heart.”
He was charged Friday with aggravated murder due to what prosecutors called the “especially heinous” nature of the grisly slaying. The charge carries the possibility of a death sentence.
Weston was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2010, and moved in with Dexter after other families “had it up to here” with his violent behavior, according to Charles Kulander, his uncle.
“If anybody was closer and loved Zach more than her, I don’t know how,” he told the Tribune. “She was always there for him.”
