( 4UMF NEWS ) Tebow Named to NFL’s Top 100 Players List:
New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow has been named to the NFL Network‘s Top 100 Players list, checking in at no. 95. It’s an impressive feat for someone who began last season as a backup, and is a backup when it comes to the base Jets offense this season. Of course, Tebow will still get his chance to shine in the wildcat package and doing some different things for the Jets this year.
People will debate whether New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow deserves to be on the list, but they won’t get anywhere. With Tebow, and often with these current Jets in general, there are other emotions involved that prevent a legitimate discussion about the merits of what happens on the field. Those that love Tebow will defend his spot on the list no matter what, and those that are tired of hearing about him will decry him being included no matter he has done or what he does in the future.
There is a trump card here. It wasn’t crazed fans in love with Tebow that got him on the list. He was voted as the no. 95 player in the NFL by other players around the league.
So without the another opportunity to point out how frothing-at-the-mouth Tebow supporters are going to be a nuisance for Mark Sanchez this season, how can the media drum up some Tebow vs. Sanchez sentiment?
Waste no time in pointing out that Sanchez didn’t make the list. Don’t allow anything surrounding the Jets to stand on its own, not if it’s positive. Credit to Jenny Vrentas of The Star-Ledger, who was able to cover the news without inciting some Sanchez vs. Tebow talk.
Everyone is so caught up in the “quarterback” label for Tim Tebow that it’s creating something that isn’t there. He’s listed as a quarterback because the Jets have to put him somewhere on the depth chart, just as Brad Smith was listed as a wide receiver in 2010 when he threw almost as many passes(3) as he caught(4).
