Dwyane Wade might be able to say no to Jordan Brand, but Russell Westbrook can’t. Less than a week after D-Wade announced that he was making the move from Jordan Brand to Chinese sneaker company Li-Ning, Jordan Brand turned around and announced a huge new signing. They’ve officially welcomed Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook into the mix and hope that he’ll be able to fill the void left by Wade’s departure.
“We are very excited to welcome Russell to the Jordan family,” Michael Jordan said in a statement earlier this week. “Russell’s style, both on and off the court, combined with his love and dedication to the game make him a perfect fit for the Jordan Brand. We love the drive and passion for basketball that Russell brings.”
The move by Jordan Brand and Westbrook wasn’t completely unexpected. Russell had reportedly been in talks with several different sneakers companies this offseason who were trying to obtain his services. But, when he showed up at Thunder media day earlier in the week rocking a pair of Nike Air Jordan 1 Phat sneakers, we assumed something was in the works.
It didn’t take Westbrook long to start rocking his first pair of Jordan player exclusives, either. During the Thunder/Houston Rockets preseason game on Thursday night, Westbrook wore a pair of Nike Air Jordan Super.Fly PE sneakers in a special Oklahoma City colorway. We’re not sure if those are the sneakers that he’ll be rocking all season or if he’ll be getting his own signature sneaker at some point. But, for now, Westbrook is Team Jordan all the way.
