( 4UMF NEWS ) Queens Politician Arrested:
New York state Senator Shirley Huntley turned herself in and was arrested Monday amid a continuing investigation by Attorney General Eric Schneiderman into state grants she provided nonprofit organizations.
Supporters lined up outside the prosecutors office where Huntley walked out in handcuffs. “I’m having a great day,” she said.
This weekend Huntley spoke along side with her lawyer. “Our great senator here who’s been a wonderful supporter of this community is going to be arrested and arraigned,” said Sally Butler.
Huntley was joined by her lawyer and supporters with signs, held what her aides called an emergency news conference on her street to talk about a corruption investigation against her.
“I’ve been in this community for 40 years. People know me, and I am not just going to roll over and say okay,” said Huntley.
Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s office is not commenting on their investigation or the charges expected to be brought against Huntley, who’s being accused of funneling taxpayer money to family members through non-profits she set up. Non-profits allegedly run out of her house.
The six-year incumbent is facing a tough primary challenge from city councilman James Sanders, Jr.
Despite her legal troubles, Huntley says she’s staying in the race.
