( 4UMF NEWS ) Plane Crashes Off Long Island Coast:
Two passengers were in a small plane that crashed and sank in the Moriches inlet near Fire Island on Saturday afternoon.
Local fisherman converged at the crash site and tried to pull the man and woman to safety but were unable to reach them before the aircraft sank, said Mark Averill of the U.S. Coast Guard.
The good Samaritans even tied a line to the 1946 Globe Swift single-propeller plane to keep it from drifting out to sea, but it ended up about 15 to 20 feet below the water’s surface soon after the 3 p.m. crash.
The plane had been flying low in an apparent attempt to make an emergency landing, officials said.
Suffolk County police divers were still searching for the victims at nightfall.
