President Obama could only hope Florida pizza shop owner Scott Van Duzer could give him the same kind of boost in the polls.
Van Duzer, a New York native and owner of Big Apple Pasta & Pizza restaurant in Fort Pierce, was so fired up that Obama had complimented him on his pecs — not to mention his pizza — that he put them into action, lifting the President about a foot off the floor with a bear hug/dead lift combo.
“Look at that!” Obama cried out when Van Duzer, 46, finally dropped him like a too-light dumbbell. “Man, are you a power lifter or what?”
Actually, yes. Van Duzer, about 6-feet-3 and 260 pounds, can put up 350 pounds on the bench press. And he’s no dummy: He got a Secret Serv-ice agent’s permission before manhandling the commander-in-chief. “He said I was all right as long as I didn’t take him away,” Van Duzer said.
Van Duzer, who moved from upstate Newburgh, N.Y., to Florida as a child, told the Daily News that he’s a Republican, but voted for Obama in 2008 and will again.
“Like an old friend, I gave him a big bear hug,” he said. “I was overcome with emotion. I own a little pizza shop — you think the President of the United States is going to walk in?”
As for Obama, he certainly learned that if you mess with the bull, you get the horns. “Scott, let me tell you, you are like the biggest pizza shop owner I’ve ever seen,” Obama told Van Duzer before the big lift
