Actress Katie Holmes has pulled the plug on her five-year marriage in a heartbreaking move for superstar hubby Tom Cruise.
The actress, 33, released a statement through her lawyer saying her primary concern during the surprise split is the couple’s 6-year-old daughter, Suri.
Cruise’s camp said the 49-year-old “Top Gun” star is hurting.
“Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy,” Cruise’s rep said in a statement to People.com.
Earlier this month, Cruise gushed about his wife to red carpet reporters covering the London premiere of his movie “Rock of Ages,” in which he plays a rock god on the precipice of destruction.
“Nothing’s more important than my wife, my children,” Cruise said in London. “She’s an amazing woman, and I have amazing kids. …I feel very lucky.”
The couple had not been photographed together in public for months. Holmes is currently in New York with daughter Suri. Cruise has been photographed in Iceland this week shooting the movie “Oblivion.”
According to TMZ.com, Holmes is asking for sole custody of the couple’s daughter, a sign of “nastiness” in the split.
The couple, nicknamed TomKat, tied the knot in November 2006 during a star-studded wedding held at the 15th-century Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano, Italy.

It was the first marriage for Holmes and the third for Cruise, who previously was married to actresses Nicole Kidman (with whom he has two adopted children) and Mimi Rogers.
“This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family,” Holmes’ New Jersey-based attorney, Jonathan Wolfe, said in a statement. “Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.”
