( 4UMF NEWS ) iPhone Factory Brawl Shuts Down Production:
A brawl involving up to 2,000 employees erupted at a dormitory near a factory in China Sunday night, injuring 40 workers and forcing the factory to temporarily suspend production, NBC News reported.
The altercation transpired in the northern city of Taiyuan near a Foxconn Technology Group factory, which manufactures Apple’s iPhones.
According to a police statement, 5,000 police officers were dispatched to the scene, and the situation was brought under control a few hours later. Foxconn released a statement saying 40 people were taken to the hospital for medical attention, and that the incident escalated from a personal dispute between several employees.
“The cause of this dispute is under investigation by local authorities and we are working closely with them in this process, but it appears not to have been work-related,” Foxconn said in the statement.
The company, which also assembles products for Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard, has encountered a few violent disputes at its plants in China, and has also faced scrutiny in the past about wages and working hours.
