( 4UMF NEWS ) Drunk Tourist Falls Asleep On Conveyor Belt:

A drunk Norwegian tourist at Rome’s Fiumicino airport was literally hammered last month for checking in much more than his baggage allowance: himself.

The 36-year-old man showed up to Italy’s busiest airport at around 6 p.m. on July 23 with a backpack and a beer in hand, having had quite a bit to drink, according to the Italian daily La Repubblica.

The man intended to fly back to Oslo, but when he saw there was no one around to attend to him, climbed over the check-in counter and fell into a deep slumber on the luggage belt.

Soon, however, the belt started to move and the man passed through the airport’s inside chambers for over 50 yards.

No one noticed the traveling Norwegian until he passed through the x-ray machine. A security guard saw something — the man’s internal organs on a monitor — and said something — warning his colleagues and the police, according to La Repubblica.

Meanwhile, the paper reports that the tourist continued to sleep “undeterred.”

The incident raised fears of lackluster security at the airport, an important hub for European travelers.

But airport officials told La Repubblica that this does not represent a significant problem, as the man could never have arrived in the “heart” of the airport and that he really only could have traveled those 50-someodd yards.

“There is a security system – a sort of roll-up blind – which can only be opened by the member of staff who loads the baggage,” an official told La Repubblica.

The tourist now faces charges related to the incident.
