( 4UMF NEWS ) Maino – Day After Tomorrow Album Review:

Brooklyn rapper Maino day has come. Day After Tomorrow, his highly-anticipated album hits the shelves today. Jermaine ‘Maino’ Coleman’s follow-up to his 2009 If Tomorrow Comes… suffered a series of setbacks but Maino once again proves that perseverance pays off.

Day After Tomorrow starts off with a high energy as Maino navigates his story-telling through street anthem hits with hard banging beats. The album is somewhat weighed down by singing hooks, which although it has become a staple for many rappers, it doesn’t necessarily match Maino’s sound on every song.

Maino is at his best when he’s in the confession booth where he talks about the trappings of his lifestyle, the one he left behind and the one he traded it in for. On ‘Need A Way’ out Maino recounts with the three stages of his life from growing up poor to his jail sentence to finally becoming a rapper.

On my knees praying for a better way
Waitin on a miracle
We need a change
I cld hardly sleep
I got stomach pains
Im hungry and my father aint been home in days
When it’s quiet I can hear my momma cryin
And the sound of her voice says she’s tired of tryin

‘Never Gon Stop’

Am I really winning?
Cuz I keep taking losses
Another girl is pregnant
That’s one more abortion
Catch me cuz Im fallin
I hear fame calling
But tell me why its feeling like my life is in the toilet?

The T.I. and Meek Mill assisted ‘Cream’ is perhaps the most powerful track on the album. ‘Nino Brown’ isn’t far behind. It is interesting to note the best tracks off of Day After Tomorrow are anthems for the street as opposed to the radio-friendly hits Maino attempts on the album.

‘Unstoppable’ with the fake Usher and ‘That Could Be Us’ are the best radio friendly songs on Day After Tomorrow. ‘Heaven For A G’ and ‘Glad To be Alive’ fall flat.

Maino has shown growth since If Tomorrow Comes… The Day After Tomorrow is testament to Maino’s hunger and drive for the game and it will be interesting to see what he has in store for the future.
